Mercado do Bolhão
The Mercado do Bolhão is Porto's municipal market and occupies a building completed in 1914 to a design by the architect Correia da Silva, who combined reinforced concrete, a metal structure, timber roofs and granite stonework. The name comes from a stream that formed a small bubble in the ground. In the 1940s a mezzanine floor was added linking the entrances on Rua Alexandre Braga and Sá da Bandeira. After more than four years of works it reopened on 15 September 2022, with 81 indoor stalls, 38 outdoor shops and 10 restaurants. It has four entrances at different levels: the south one, on Rua Formosa, opens onto the ground floor and the north one, on Rua de Fernandes Tomás, onto the upper floor. The stalls are grouped into sections for fish, meat, vegetables and flowers. There are ten lifts and access is possible through all four entrances.
