Peña de los Enamorados
This is a limestone outcrop about 874 metres high, in the municipality of Antequera, near the A-92 motorway. Its profile resembles the face of a reclining woman. It forms part of the Antequera Dolmens Site, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016 along with the Menga and Viera dolmens, the El Romeral tholos and El Torcal; the axis of the Menga dolmen points towards it. It has also been a Site of Cultural Interest as an archaeological zone since 2011, with remains from the Palaeolithic, Bronze Age burials, Roman tombs and medieval structures; at its north-western foot is the Matacabras rock shelter, with red paintings. A frontier legend tells of a pair of lovers, she the daughter of a Muslim king and he a Christian captive, who threw themselves from the summit in each other's arms so as not to be separated. The Antequera humanist Juan de Vilches recorded it in Latin in 1544. As it is a protected area, it is best enjoyed from a distance.
