National Historic Museum
The National Historical Museum is housed in the Old Parliament House, at 13 Kolokotroni Street, a building constructed between 1858 and 1875 to plans revised by the Greek architect Panagiotis Kalkos. The museum holds the collection of the Historical and Ethnological Society of Greece, founded in 1882, the oldest of its kind in the country. The permanent exhibition covers the period from the fall of Constantinople in 1453 to the Second World War, with particular emphasis on the Greek War of Independence and the founding of the modern state. Exhibits include weapons, personal items and mementoes of historical figures, historical paintings by Greek and foreign artists, manuscripts and an extensive collection of traditional costumes from various regions of Greece. The collection is displayed in the building's corridors and rooms, while the great central hall of the National Assembly is used for lectures. In front of the building stands a bronze equestrian statue of General Theodoros Kolokotronis, by the sculptor Lazaros Sochos, with reliefs on the pedestal depicting the Battle of Dervenakia and a session of the Peloponnesian Senate. The museum organises temporary exhibitions and educational activities, and has a shop and publications.
