Frederick the Great built this palace between 1763 and 1769, at the end of the Seven Years' War, to show that Prussia was still standing. Johann Gottfried Büring worked on it first, and from 1764 Carl von Gontard. The three-storey building has façades 220 metres long, more than 200 rooms and some 400 sandstone figures. Above the dome, the Three Graces hold up the Prussian crown. On the ground floor is the Grotto Hall, with walls inlaid with shells, quartz and semi-precious stones, and a floor with marine animals and plants. In the south, the palace's Baroque theatre has been preserved. Opposite, on the other side of the courtyard, the Communs, two wings joined by a colonnade, served as a backdrop and housed kitchens and servants. Wilhelm II later used it as a residence for his family. It is at the western end of Sanssouci Park.
