Sultan Mosque (Masjid Sultan)
The Sultan Mosque is at 3 Muscat Street, in the Kampong Glam district. Its origins go back to 1824, when the first mosque was built. The present building was raised in stages between 1925 and 1931 and completed in 1932, to a design by the Irish architect Denis Santry of Swan & Maclaren. Its style is classical with Indo-Saracenic influence. Two golden onion-shaped domes crown the corners of the building; their bases are decorated with cut pieces of glass bottle bottoms collected from the community during the reconstruction. The building is oriented towards Mecca and so is not aligned with the surrounding streets. Visitors must take off their shoes, dress modestly and may not enter the main prayer hall without being accompanied by a mosque official.
