MURAM - Regional Museum of Modern Art (Aguirre Palace)
The museum occupies the Aguirre Palace and an adjoining modern building, on Plaza de la Merced. The palace is a Modernista work by Víctor Beltrí, commissioned in 1898 by the mining entrepreneur Camilo Aguirre and completed in 1901. The façade combines a Cartagena-style bay window, sculpted bees as a symbol of prosperity through work, ceramic angels at the top and a ceramic dome. Inside, original features survive, such as the vestibule, an imperial staircase, a neo-Gothic oratory and a neo-Rococo ballroom with ceiling paintings by Cecilio Pla. MURAM opened in 2009 and focuses on 19th- and 20th-century art up to the mid-century, with works from the Region of Murcia and elsewhere.
