Babelsberg Palace
Schloss Babelsberg is a Neo-Gothic palace on the banks of the Havel, in the park of the same name. Between 1833 and 1835 Karl Friedrich Schinkel designed a small first house for Prince William, the future William I, and his wife Augusta. When William became crown prince in 1840, Persius and Strack extended it between 1844 and 1849. It served as the couple's summer residence for more than fifty years. The park was laid out from 1833 with Peter Joseph Lenné and Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau, with terraces around the palace, an ornamental garden, an artificial water system feeding lakes, waterfalls and streams, and views of the Glienicke Bridge and Glienicke Park. At the highest point stands the Siegessäule, a column commemorating Prussian military victories.
