Central Market
The Central Market occupies the site of the former orchard of the Descalzos convent, in what is now Plaza de la Libertad, right in the historic centre. Torcuato Benjumeda designed a neoclassical square with Doric-columned arcades that opened in 1838. A century later, between 1926 and 1929, the Seville architect Juan Talavera y Heredia transformed it while keeping the Doric column structure: the exterior was finished in November 1927 and the whole building at the end of 1929. A refurbishment in this century added a dining area, the Rincón Gastronómico, to attract visitors as well. The building was declared a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) on 16 December 2019. Inside, fish, meat, fruit and vegetable stalls coexist with bars where you can eat what you have just bought, and an outdoor market forms around the square.
