Napier of Magdala Battery (100-ton gun)
The Napier of Magdala Battery, in Gibraltar's southern district next to Rosia Bay, preserves in position a 100-ton gun, one of the only two left in the world; the other is in Malta. It is named after Baron Napier of Magdala and was built between 1878 and 1884 to reinforce this area with a heavy battery. The piece arrived from England on the SS Stanley and was landed on 10 December 1882 at the New Mole battery; dragging it about 400 yards (about 365 metres) to its emplacement took 21 days using a special sledge. It was mounted on its carriage on 23 July 1883. In 1898 it split during firing practice and was replaced by the gun from the nearby Victoria Battery. By 1906 it was already obsolete and it never fired at an enemy. Today it keeps its position, though not its hydraulic mechanisms. The site is linked to Nelson: after Trafalgar, HMS Victory was towed to Rosia Bay.
