Basilica of the Sacred Heart (la Iglesiona)
Church known in Gijón as the Iglesiona, built between 1918 and 1922 in a style that blends Gaudí-inspired Modernisme with Gothic echoes. As the plot was narrow, parabolic transverse arches were used, an unusual solution that gives the nave its character. At the top of the bell tower stands the figure of the Sacred Heart, by Serafín Basterra, visible from many points in the city. In 1930 it suffered a fire and was repaired by Manuel del Busto; during the Civil War it was used as a prison. In 2003 the Holy See granted it the title of basilica. It is on Calle Begoña, right in the centre, and its tower serves as a landmark from the Paseo de Begoña. It is the largest church in the city.
