Zagreb Botanical Garden
A garden belonging to the Faculty of Science of the University of Zagreb, founded in 1889 and opened to the public a few years later. It covers about five hectares right in the city centre and is part of the series of parks known as Lenuci's Horseshoe. It has been protected as a monument of garden architecture since 1971. Its layout is landscaped, with groups of freely growing trees, winding paths and a symmetrical flower bed; the largest part is an arboretum laid out as an English park. Inside there are two artificial lakes with aquatic plants, which the painter Slava Raškaj took as the subject of her water lily series. Notable buildings include an exhibition pavilion from 1891, the Vienna Secession-style management building, several stone houses and a group of greenhouses. The specimens are labelled with their Latin names. It opens seasonally, from spring to autumn, and opening hours change, so it is worth checking them before you go.
