Museu Frederic Marès
The museum occupies part of the former Palau Reial Major of Barcelona, in Plaça de Sant Iu, right next to the cathedral. The sculptor Frederic Marès promised his collection to the city in 1944 and the museum opened in 1948 with four rooms; it grew until 1970. The sculpture section runs chronologically through Hispanic art from Antiquity to the 19th century, with plenty of polychrome wood carving from the Romanesque and Gothic periods, as well as Baroque works by masters such as Gregorio Fernández and Pedro de Mena. Among the Romanesque pieces is a marble relief from the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes. Separately, the "Collector's Cabinet" brings together, in seventeen rooms, thousands of everyday 19th-century objects: fans, clocks, toys, weapons, ceramics and photographs. You enter through a courtyard of orange trees and arcades, a remnant of the palace's medieval garden.
