Cerro de San Vicente Museum
Cerro de San Vicente is the westernmost of the three hills on which Salamanca stands. Here the city's first stable, continuous settlement was documented, of the Soto de Medinilla culture, founded in the 7th century BC; in the 4th century BC a good part of its inhabitants moved to the Teso de las Catedrales. In the 10th century, under Ramiro II, the monastery of San Vicente was founded on the summit, the city's first monastic foundation, which passed to Cluny in 1143 and to the reformed Benedictines in 1504. The French turned it into a fort in 1809 and it was destroyed in the siege of 1812. Excavations, expanded after a university residence built in 1951 was demolished in 2003, brought to light protohistoric and conventual remains. The museum occupies a building constructed on the ruins of the convent and tells the story of the city from the Iron Age, with the open-air site around it.
