Vila Sassetti
Vila Sassetti is a residence on the northern slope of the Sintra mountains, designed from 1890 for Victor Carlos Sassetti, owner of the Hotel Braganza in Lisbon and the Hotel Victor in Sintra. His friend Luigi Manini, an architect and set designer, helped him, and together they imagined a summer house inspired by Lombard castles. The building is recognisable by its large circular tower in Lombard Romanesque style, in terracotta tones. The 1.2-hectare garden follows a theatrical aesthetic along a winding path that crosses an artificial watercourse. Calouste Gulbenkian rented it and lived there occasionally between 1920 and 1955. Parques de Sintra acquired it in 2011 and opened a trail of about 1,850 metres linking the historic centre with the Castle of the Moors and the Pena Park. The entrance is near Praça Ferreira de Castro.
