Musée de Cluny
The Musée de Cluny, the national museum of the Middle Ages, occupies an exceptional ensemble in the Latin Quarter: the Gallo-Roman baths of Lutetia, with a vaulted frigidarium rising more than 14 metres, and the Hôtel de Cluny, a late 15th-century Flamboyant Gothic mansion. The permanent route, arranged chronologically, spans a thousand years of history, from the Gallo-Roman era to the beginnings of the Renaissance, and brings together about 23,000 works, of which 2,300 are on permanent display. Highlights include the cycle of six tapestries of The Lady and the Unicorn (La Dame à la licorne), the Pillar of the Boatmen (Pilier des Nautes, the oldest monument in Paris), the Visigothic votive crowns from the Guarrazar treasure, Romanesque and Gothic sculptures from Saint-Denis and Notre-Dame, Byzantine and Carolingian ivories, and medieval goldwork. The renovation completed in 2022 reorganised the galleries and added a contemporary entrance pavilion, improving accessibility and the flow of the visit. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and has a bookshop-boutique and a café.
