Lyceum
The Lyceum of Athens is an archaeological site where visitors can explore the remains of the ancient gymnasium and garden where Aristotle taught, walking with his students along paths and covered porticoes, which gave rise to the Peripatetic school. Besides philosophical teaching, this site hosted activities such as military exercises, meetings of the Athenian assembly and cult practices, making use of open spaces and facilities such as the gymnasium, the wrestling ground (palaestra) and paths that crossed the area. The site lies near Mount Lycabettus and the Ilissos River, and preserves traces of structures such as the library founded by Aristotle, which held one of the earliest manuscript collections and was a meeting point for scholars from various disciplines.
