Museum Jorge Rando
The Museum Jorge Rando is Spain's first Expressionist museum, opened in 2014 in Málaga and dedicated to the work of painter and sculptor Jorge Rando. It occupies a building adjoining the Monastery of Las Mercedarias, on Calle Cruz del Molinillo, combining the old brick of the cloister with exposed concrete and rusted steel, and has four naturally lit exhibition rooms. The permanent collection is organised into rotating thematic cycles: rooms 1 and 2 house works such as 'The Birth of Colour', visual poems balancing circles and colours; room 3 presents 'Forty Days Before', on Lent and religious humanism; and room 4 shows 'Beauty Weeps with Tragedy', on humankind in the apocalypse of the 21st century. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions by national and international artists linked to Expressionism and Neo-Expressionism, such as Käthe Kollwitz and Ernst Barlach. It has a specialist library, a courtyard with a century-old mandarin tree, and El Atelier, a space for pictorial creation. Admission, guided tours and events are free, and the monthly cultural programme includes concerts, film clubs, poetry, talks, debates and theatre.
