Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca
Former main synagogue of Toledo, built around 1180 and turned into a church after the pogrom of 1391, now open as a museum without worship. In its Mudéjar interior, the work of Muslim stonemasons, five aisles are separated by octagonal brick pillars supporting horseshoe arches, with capitals decorated with pine cones and plant motifs and geometric friezes of Almohad origin. At the east end are three small Renaissance chapels added in the mid-16th century and attributed to Alonso de Covarrubias, as well as an altarpiece from the school of Berruguete. The contrast between the sober exterior and the elaborate interior, with its smooth white walls, defines the visit.
