Qibao Old Street

CultureVisit: ~90 minFree

Qibao Old Street is the historic, pedestrian core of Qibao, in Minhang district (Shanghai), arranged around the Puhui River. Visitors walk alleys with traditional Chinese architecture, cross three arched stone bridges (Kangle, Puhui River and Anping) and find teahouses along the river, souvenir shops and numerous street food stalls. The area brings together a group of small attractions that can largely be visited with a combined ticket: the Bell Tower, the Cotton Textile Mill, the Shadow Museum, the House of Traditional Trades, the Cricket House, the Zhou Miniature Museum, the Pawnshop, the Memorial Hall of the artist Zhang Chongren and the Qibao Calligraphy Hall. Zhang Chongren, a painter and sculptor who lived here, was a friend of the Belgian cartoonist Hergé and inspired the character Chang Chong-Chen in Tintin. The area is also known for crickets, with a house devoted to them. Boat rides are offered from a jetty by the river. It is easy to reach on Shanghai Metro line 9 to Qibao station, exit 2.
