Panometer Dresden
The Panometer occupies a sandstone gasometer of 1880, the work of Theodor Friedrich, a student of Gottfried Semper. It served as a low-pressure storage tank for the city's gas, with a capacity of 30,000 cubic metres, and closed in 1973. Since 2006 it has been the second permanent venue for Yadegar Asisi's 360° panoramas. The cylinder is 24 metres high to the eaves and the interior dome reaches 39 metres. Since 27 March 2026 it has been showing GREAT BARRIER REEF, a fictional underwater vision of the planet's largest coral reef, with corals and shoals of fish amid blue and green waters. The panorama's surface area exceeds 3,000 square metres. Asisi created it from tens of thousands of photographs and sketches from expeditions with the filmmaker Ben Cropp. The lighting alternates between day and night, with a soundtrack by Eric Babak, and an exhibition explains the reef's biodiversity and its threats.
