Clock Tower
On the Fishermen's Quay of Barcelona's port, in Barceloneta, stands this tall square-based tower, which began life as a lighthouse in 1772 and now has a four-faced clock visible from various points around the harbour. Its lower section, square in plan and shaped like a truncated pyramid, is topped by a flat roof terrace added when it became a clock tower, and the tower keeps windows that light the interior staircase. The structure is protected as a Bé Cultural d'Interès Local and has a historical link with science: in 1791 it was one of the places in Barcelona used by the French Academy of Sciences to determine the length of the metre.
