Les Invalides
Les Invalides is a vast architectural complex in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, founded by Louis XIV in 1670 as a residence and hospital for war veterans. It now houses the Army Museum, with collections ranging from antiquity to the 20th century, and the tallest Baroque dome in Paris (107 metres), beneath which lies the tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte in a red-quartzite sarcophagus on a green granite base. It also includes the Museum of Scale Models, with models of fortified towns from the 17th to 19th centuries, the Charles de Gaulle Memorial, the Museum of the Order of the Liberation, and the Church of Saint-Louis-des-Invalides, which preserves a historic 1679-1687 organ. The complex still functions as a national institution for disabled war veterans, with residential facilities, a medical centre and outpatient services. The Esplanade des Invalides, in front of the building, hosted events during the 2024 Olympic Games.
