Mitre Square
Mitre Square is a small square measuring around 23 by 24 metres, located in Aldgate, in the City of London. It is connected by three passages: to Mitre Street in the south-west, to Creechurch Place in the north-west, and, via St James's Passage (formerly Church Passage), to Duke's Place in the north-east. The square occupies the site of the cloister of Holy Trinity Priory, Aldgate, demolished under Henry VIII during the dissolution of the monasteries. In its southern corner, Catherine Eddowes, a victim of Jack the Ripper, was murdered, her body found there at 1:45 a.m. on 30 September 1888; it was the westernmost of the Whitechapel murders and the only one committed within the City of London. A 19-storey, 79-metre office development known as One Mitre Square has been proposed for the site.
