St Giles-without-Cripplegate
An Anglican church on Fore Street, within the Barbican complex, in the City of London. Its name refers to its position outside the medieval city wall, next to Cripplegate, and it is dedicated to St Giles, patron saint of the sick and disabled. There was a Saxon church here in the 11th century, replaced around 1090 by a Norman one; the present Perpendicular Gothic building was rebuilt in 1394, in the reign of Richard II. It suffered a fire in 1545 and in 1682 the tower was raised with a brick stage. It is one of the few medieval churches in London to have survived the Great Fire of 1666 and has been Grade I listed since 1950. A bombing raid in the Second World War left it gutted inside and it was rebuilt after the war. Oliver Cromwell was married here in 1620, and John Milton, John Foxe and the seafarer Martin Frobisher are buried here.
