Bishop's Palace of Salamanca
Residence of the bishops of Salamanca until 1964, in Plaza de Juan XXIII, next to the cathedrals. The original palace was demolished in the 19th century because of its poor condition and the current one was designed in 1886 by José Secall y Asión; it was completed in 1889 and opened in 1890. It is an eclectic building with classicist influence, with a U-shaped main façade, pilasters and curved and triangular pediments. At the start of the Civil War, Bishop Plá y Deniel handed it over to Franco as his headquarters. In March 2023 it reopened as the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art: the ground floor is devoted to the painter Fernando Gallego, a painter of the Castilian Hispano-Flemish Gothic, and the rest of the building holds museum rooms, workshops and temporary exhibitions. It also houses the Diocesan Archive of Salamanca.
