Palacio de la Isla
A small palace of Romantic character with Neo-Gothic influences, which the lawyer and banker Juan Muguiro y Casi had built in 1883 as a summer residence, on a former orchard on Paseo de la Isla, beside the River Arlanzón. It was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1942. Between August 1937 and October 1939 it served as Franco's headquarters and residence, and it was here that he signed the final war communiqué, on 1 April 1939. It later housed the General Council of Castile and León and the regional Junta, and since 2008 it has been the seat of the Castilian and Leonese Institute of Language. On the first floor are a chapel, the Aula de los Orígenes del Español and the Epigraphic Archive of Hispania; on the second, the Torre Encantada, an artistic project by the Leonese poet and artist Adolfo Alonso Ares. The gardens around the building frequently host cultural events.
