Le Grand Véfour is a historic restaurant beneath the arcades of the Palais-Royal, at 17 Rue de Beaujolais, in the 1st arrondissement of Paris. Opened in 1784 as the Café de Chartres, it is one of the oldest restaurants in the capital and has been frequented by figures such as Napoleon, Victor Hugo, Balzac, Colette and Jean Cocteau. Its early-19th-century neoclassical décor, with large gilt mirrors, painted panelling and overdoor paintings, is a listed historic monument and remains almost intact. Now relaunched by Paris Society with chef Bruno Doucet, it offers honest, exacting French cuisine in a setting that blends heritage with contemporary gastronomy. There is also a terrace beneath the arcades of the Palais-Royal and a cellar of fine wines.
