Duke of York Column
CultureVisit: ~30 minFree
The Duke of York Column stands at the southern end of Waterloo Place, between the terraces of Carlton House Terrace, and is topped by a bronze statue of the duke dressed in the robes of the Knights of the Garter. Visitors find a Tuscan-order granite column, surrounded by an iron railing at the top, and can see the broad flight of steps known as the Duke of York Steps leading down to The Mall. Although there was once an internal spiral staircase of 168 steps leading to an observation platform, access to the inside of the column has been closed to the public for many decades.
