East Side Gallery
The East Side Gallery is a 1,316-metre open-air art gallery on the longest surviving stretch of the Berlin Wall, on Mühlenstraße, between Ostbahnhof station and the Oberbaum Bridge, along the River Spree. In spring 1990, after the Wall opened, 118 artists from 21 countries painted more than a hundred murals on the side that once faced East Berlin, commenting on the political changes of 1989/90. Highlights include 'Mein Gott hilf mir, diese tödliche Liebe zu überleben' by Dmitri Vrubel, 'Test the Rest' by Birgit Kinder and 'Es geschah im November' by Kani Alavi. The gallery has official protected heritage (Denkmal) status and receives more than three million visitors a year. Since 2018, the Berlin Wall Foundation has been responsible for its structural maintenance and for mediating the historic site. Because of deterioration from erosion, graffiti and vandalism, most of the original murals were repainted by their creators in 2009, though some artists declined to repeat their works.
