The Historical Museum of Strasbourg is housed in the Renaissance building of the former Grande Boucherie (Great Butchery), built between 1586 and 1588. Founded in 1920, it reopened completely renovated in 2013. Its route covers nine centuries of the city's history, from the Middle Ages to the creation of the European institutions, through 1,700 works on display. The collection includes military objects, costumes, paintings, drawings and sculptures, with donations from citizens of Strasbourg and Alsace. The centrepiece is the relief plan of 1727, a model of the city and its surroundings at a scale of 1/600 over almost 80 m². The museum includes more than nine playful devices and nine digital ones that offer interactions with the works. It also houses objects from European institutions, such as the judicial robe of Jean-Paul Costa, former president of the European Court of Human Rights. The visit is conceived as a historical and playful adventure that invites reflection on living conditions in different eras.
