Doria-Pamphilj Palace
In central Rome, between Via del Corso and Piazza del Collegio Romano, this palace occupies an entire block and is still the private residence of the Doria Pamphilj family. The visit takes in the state rooms on the main floor: a succession of gilded and painted galleries around a square courtyard, with paintings hung at several heights, Gobelins tapestries, furniture and Roman sculptures. In a room of its own, next to a Bernini bust of the same pope, hangs Velázquez's portrait of Innocent X; other rooms hold two canvases by Caravaggio, Raphael's double portrait, Titian's Salome and Filippo Lippi's Annunciation. The Hall of Mirrors preserves large 18th-century Venetian mirrors, and the chapel was designed by Carlo Fontana. The double-height Aldobrandini Room has sculptures from the Roman imperial period.
