The Naschmarkt is Vienna's most popular street market, located on Wienzeile above the Wien River, stretching roughly 1.5 kilometres. It has existed since the 16th century, and from 1793 all fruit and vegetables arriving in Vienna by cart had to be sold there; the first pavilions above the Wien River were built in 1902. Today it houses stalls selling fresh fruit and vegetables from around the world, exotic spices, cheese, bread, Kaisersemmeln rolls, cakes, meat and seafood, alongside numerous small restaurants serving sushi, kebab, fish, seafood and traditional Viennese dishes such as Kaiserschmarrn or Palatschinken. There are also clothing and accessory stalls. Every Saturday since 1977 the market has extended beyond the Wienzeile into an adjacent area where a Flohmarkt (flea market) is held. Its unique atmosphere is famous beyond Vienna's borders and draws large numbers of tourists every year.
