Casa Batlló

CultureVisit: ~90 min

Casa Batlló is at number 43 Passeig de Gràcia, in the Eixample block known as the Block of Discord (Mançana de la Discòrdia). The original building was put up in 1875 by Emilio Sala Cortés. In 1903 it was bought by the textile industrialist Josep Batlló, who commissioned Antoni Gaudí to carry out a renovation, done between 1904 and 1906. Gaudí clad the façade in trencadís of ceramic and coloured glass, with a wavy outline, balconies that resemble masks and bone-like columns. The roof is shaped like a dragon's back. Inside, a light well is covered in tiles that fade from blue to white; the noble floor, where Batlló lived, has helicoidal ceilings, and the attic is covered with catenary arches that evoke a rib cage. It is part of the 2005 UNESCO listing of Gaudí's works.
