The Vittoriano, or Altare della Patria, in Piazza Venezia, honours the first king of unified Italy. It was designed by Giuseppe Sacconi; work began in 1885, it was partially inaugurated in 1911 and completed in 1935. It is about 81 m tall. The Unknown Soldier was buried beneath the statue of Roma in 1921, and since 2007 a lift has gone up to the terrace with 360-degree views.
