Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery
The Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery (Seitoku Kinen Kaigakan) is an art and history museum in the outer precinct (Gaien) of Meiji Shrine, Tokyo. The building, completed in 1926, is one of the earliest purpose-built museums in Japan and was designated an Important Cultural Property in 2011. Its interior holds a permanent collection of 80 large-format paintings (around 3 metres tall), split evenly between Japanese-style (Nihonga) and Western-style (Yōga) works. Created by leading artists of the time, they chronologically depict scenes from the life and reign of Emperor Meiji, serving as a historical and artistic record of the era. The building itself is notable for its reinforced-concrete architecture with granite walls and a central dome, and its painting galleries are naturally lit from above.
