Accademia Bridge
The Accademia Bridge is a pedestrian arched bridge over the Grand Canal, one of the four that cross it, and it links the sestieri of San Marco and Dorsoduro. It takes its name from the Accademia di Belle Arti, which occupied the Scuola della Carità between 1807 and 2004. As early as 1488 the provveditore Luca Tron proposed a bridge at this spot, but the council never voted on it. The first, made of steel and designed by Alfred Neville, opened on 20 November 1854. In 1933 it was replaced by the current wooden one, designed by Eugenio Miozzi, even though many had expected a stone one. From the top you can look out over the Grand Canal towards the basilica of the Salute. Couples have hung padlocks on the metal railings, a practice the Venetian authorities have cracked down on.
