Shinobazu Pond
Shinobazu Pond is a natural pond within Ueno Park, Tokyo, divided into three sections: the Lotus Pond, which is completely covered in lotus flowers in summer; the Boat Pond, offering boat rental since 1939; and the Cormorant Pond, within Ueno Zoo. At its centre lies Benten Island, home to Benten-dō temple, dedicated to Benzaiten. The pond is an important habitat for migratory and resident birds, with dozens of species and sometimes more than ten thousand individuals, notably the tufted duck, pochard and northern pintail. It also holds numerous fish species. Its history goes back to the Jōmon period, and it has long featured prominently in the history and art of Shitamachi. Visitors can stroll along its banks, cross the Kangetsukyō bridge, watch birds and, in season, rent boats. It is easily reached from several nearby train and metro stations.
