This was the church of the Mercedarian convent, an order established in Murcia after the Christian conquest. The convent moved in 1560 next to the Puerta Nueva, where it remains, after floods of the Segura. The present church was begun in 1705 and its façade, designed by José Balaguer, was built between 1711 and 1713. It features the Virgen de los Remedios and saints of the order, as well as a chain alluding to the redemption of captives. Inside is the main altarpiece, from 1744 to 1760, attributed to Jaime Bort. After the confiscation of 1835 the building was a warehouse and silk factory, and since 1931 it has been run by the Franciscans. The former convent, with its two-storey Renaissance cloister of Tuscan columns, is now the La Merced Campus of the University of Murcia, home to the Faculty of Law.
