Punta Doncella Lighthouse
The Punta Doncella lighthouse stands at the end of Estepona's seafront promenade, next to the port, on Avenida del Carmen. The original project dates from 1861, by the engineer Antonio Molina, and its first tower was built in the following years. In 1922 it was replaced by the current one, designed by Eduardo Franquelo: an octagonal tower of dressed stone 20 metres high, situated 31 metres above sea level. Its light, together with that of the Punta Almina lighthouse in Ceuta, helps ships cross the Strait of Gibraltar. Over the years the keepers' facilities and the houses where successive families of keepers lived were extended, and today the system operates with computerised remote control and automatic signalling. The interior is not open to visitors: the lighthouse is viewed from outside, with the promenade on one side and the harbour basin on the other.
