Nasrid Maristan
The Maristán was a hospital founded by Sultan Muhammad V; it was built between 1365 and 1367 in the Axares district, in the lower Albaicín beside the Darro. It treated poor patients and is considered the only documented hospital in the Islamic tradition on the Iberian Peninsula. After the conquest it was the Mint of Granada, from 1497 to 1685, and then a warehouse, a prison and tenement housing; part of it was demolished in 1843. The Junta de Andalucía acquired the remains in 1987 and it was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 2005. The Alhambra Trust restored the south portico between 2017 and 2022, and the building opened to the public in January 2023. You can see walls, pillars, beams and wooden ceilings around the courtyard, remains of the pool, sixteenth-century mint furnaces and a medieval passage towards Calle Bañuelo. The lions from the fountain are kept in the Alhambra Museum.
