The Konzerthaus Berlin, on the Gendarmenmarkt, is a concert hall with a rich history dating back to 1821, when it opened as the Königliches Schauspielhaus with the premiere of Carl Maria von Weber's 'Der Freischütz'. Designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the building combines a Greek-inspired façade with sculptures of composers and mythological figures such as Niobe, Eros and Psyche, Apollo, Orpheus and Eurydice, and Bacchus and Ariadne. Destroyed in the Second World War, it was rebuilt and reopened in 1984 as a concert hall, with a Neoclassical interior housing a large hall for 1,600 people, a small hall for 400 and a music club. Around 550 performances are staged each year, including symphonic concerts, chamber music, festivals such as Young Euro Classic, family shows and guided tours. The main hall has a pipe organ with 74 stops and 5,811 pipes, and its acoustic qualities were rated among the five best in the world in 2004. The building also hosts innovative projects such as the augmented-reality project #makeusvisible, which digitally expands the gallery of composer busts to include forgotten women composers.
