Takase River
CultureVisit: ~60 minFree
The Takase River canal runs through central Kyoto from Nijō-Kiyamachi to Fushimi. Dug in 1611, it was an important route for transporting goods during the Edo period. Today you can stroll along its banks, especially on the stretch between Sanjō and Shijō, which passes through the Pontochō district, famous for its cherry blossom. At the Ichi-no-funairi site, the only surviving boat dock of the nine that once existed, you can see a restored Takasebune boat. The spot is a three-minute walk from Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae station.
