The Gate Tower Building is a 16-storey office building in Fukushima-ku, Osaka. Its most striking feature is that the Hanshin Expressway, on its Umeda exit ramp of the Ikeda Route, passes through the fifth, sixth and seventh floors. The expressway does not touch the building's structure; instead it passes like a bridge supported by nearby pillars, surrounded by a structure that isolates noise and vibration. The lifts travel from the 4th to the 8th floor without stopping at the floors the road passes through. The building has a double-core structure with a circular section and a helipad on the roof. It was the first building in Japan to incorporate the Multi-level Road System, after five years of negotiations between the landowners and the expressway corporation. Visitors usually view it from the outside, since it is a private office building, but its unusual design makes it an architectural and urban curiosity.
