Clock Tower

CultureVisit: ~45 minOpening hours: Solo con visita guiada reservada, con salida desde la taquilla del Museo Correr

Tower above the archway leading to the Merceria street, on the north side of St Mark's Square. It was built in 1499, attributed to Mauro Codussi, and the two side wings were added in 1506. The clock was made by the Ranieri brothers, clockmakers from Reggio Emilia. One dial shows the signs of the zodiac, the months and the phases of the moon. At the top, two bronze automata, called the old man and the young man, strike the bell: the old man strikes two minutes early and the young man two minutes late, which is why the tower is also called the Torre dei Mori. On the second floor, wooden figures pass before the Virgin and Child at Epiphany and Ascension. The interior, with the machinery and the terraces overlooking the square and the lagoon, can only be visited by reservation and with a specialist guide.
