The museum occupies the first floor of the Palace of Charles V, within the Alhambra complex, and shares the building with the Alhambra Museum. It opened on this site on 6 October 1958; its origins lie in the nineteenth-century confiscations of Church property, which brought the art of the convents to the city. You can enter without an Alhambra ticket. The permanent collection, of about 2,000 pieces, is arranged in four blocks: Renaissance and Mannerism, Granada Baroque, nineteenth-century Granada painting, and the early decades of the twentieth century up to the avant-garde. Religious painting from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries predominates. Key works include Juan Sánchez Cotán's Still Life with Cardoon, Pedro Machuca's Resurrection of Lazarus, dated around 1519-1521, a Penitent St Jerome by Alonso Cano and wooden sculptures by Jacopo Torni and Pedro de Mena.
