Ueno Zoo, in Ueno Park, is the oldest zoo in Japan, opened in 1882. It houses more than 2,600 animals from over 500 species across 14.3 hectares. It is divided into two areas: the East Garden, with giant pandas, Sumatran tigers, gorillas and Asian elephants, among others; and the West Garden, with okapis, aye-ayes, hippopotamuses and a wide variety of birds and reptiles. The two areas are linked by the Aesop Bridge and were formerly connected by a monorail, the first in the country, now closed. The zoo has taken part in giant panda conservation and has received animals from China. Some facilities have been modernised, such as Gorilla Woods, though other older enclosures remain. It is an educational, family-friendly destination within one of Tokyo's main cultural parks.
