Great necropolis of Cairo (the Qarafa), stretching between the Islamic districts and the Mokattam hills. It holds mausoleums and complexes from the Mamluk period, such as that of Sultan Qaitbay in the Northern Cemetery, and it is also an inhabited neighbourhood: many families live among the tombs and there are streets, shops and workshops. It is best understood with a local guide.
