Orthodox Cathedral of the Transfiguration
Cathedral of the Serbian Orthodox Church and seat of the Metropolitanate of Zagreb and Ljubljana, on Petar Preradović Square. In the 14th century the site had a wooden Catholic church dedicated to St Margaret; after a fire another was built with a bulbous bell tower, and in 1781 the city sold the church to the Orthodox parish. The present building was designed by Franjo Klein, with works from 1861 until 21 October 1866. It is historicist, with Romanesque and Byzantine inspiration. Hermann Bollé designed the bell tower in 1899 and restored the facade in 1913. In 1931 it became a cathedral when the Metropolitanate was created. Inside, the highlight is the current iconostasis, with 34 icons and four free-standing walnut columns, as well as frescoes. After the 2020 earthquake there has been work on the vault and the paintwork, so the interior may have scaffolding.
