The Fundació Joan Miró opened on 10 June 1975 on Montjuïc and is the work of the architect Josep Lluís Sert. The artist wanted a centre that would encourage young people above all to experiment with contemporary art, and Sert solved this with courtyards and terraces that guide the visitor's route. In 1986 it was extended with an auditorium and a library. The collection comes from Miró's own donation and includes painting, sculpture, drawing and graphic work. Well-known pieces include the tapestry that Miró and Josep Royo wove in 1979 and Alexander Calder's Mercury Fountain, which is shown behind glass because mercury is toxic. Espai 13 is the room dedicated to emerging artists and admission is free.
