Tempelhof
Tempelhof is a Berlin locality with a history dating back to the 13th century, first mentioned in 1247 as a possession of the Knights Templar. The heart of the original settlement, with its church and estate, was fortified and surrounded by an artificial moat. Today, the former commandery has become a chain of parks — Bosepark, Kleiner Park, Alter Park and Franckepark — some of which retain ponds that were once part of that moat. The original church, built of glacial stone blocks, was destroyed in the Second World War and replaced by one of ashlar masonry with a timber-framed tower. The former Tempelhof Airport, one of the world's first commercial airports, and its surrounding grounds are now the Tempelhofer Feld park, the largest open space within the city. The Tempelhof Studios, established in 1912, operated as film and later television studios.
